20-21 History Wow, what a year! COVID 19 tested the fortitude of East Memphis Rotary, but the dedication of its membership did not let the pandemic win. With only a net loss of three members, East Memphis actually added 7 new members when most service organizations were struggling. We lost two of our beloved members, Reverend Jim Marquis and Dr. Jack Sanford. Both were a force in our club and their loss is great. Everything shut down during the pandemic, but we were able to maintain contact with members through Zoom meetings. In the Fall of 2020, we met every other week at Windyke Country Club on the patio with face masks. We learned in late December that Opera Memphis would no longer be able to host us as we later learned the building was going to be sold. We were able to move to the Hilton Garden Inn at TraVure Center beginning the last week of January 2021, meeting every week except for the third week of the month. Because of the pandemic, we were unable to carry out our regular projects but were able to purchase school supplies for our adopted school, White Station Elementary, and purchase much needed socks for the Veterans Hospital. Our Foundation made a $3,000 grant to the Collierville Balloon Festival for disabled children where many of our members volunteered. Also, the Foundation granted $3,000 to Restore Corps in honor of Matt Haaga’s presidency. Our membership at the end of the year was 101.
