1994-1995 Club History/Activites

Total membership on June 30, 1994 was 100. The club celebrated its fifth birthday with a party that included a clown/magician, prizes and games, and the presentation of the club’s first Service Above Self Award to Bob Chandler. The club’s first Outstanding Citizen Award was presented to Kay Nunnally, who donated one of her kidneys to a young boy, and the club augmenting the award with a donation to a trust established for her children’s education. Projects at Georgia Avenue continued with the creation of the Clothes Closet to provide clothing to those in need with over 1,400 items donated during the year and the installation of a professional sound system in the cafeteria. Fellowship events included a trip to the Hollywood Cafe in Robinsonville, Mississippi, a fund raising golf tournament, a holiday gala at the University Club, a Chinese dinner and tour of the Wonders Series – The Imperial Tombs of China, and a Caribbean Theme Party on the campus of The Promus Companies. Bill Phillips lead the district’s group-study exchange team to the Philippines with the in-bound team from the Philippines visiting our district and club. During the year, our club’s charitable trust grew in excess of 600%, and contributions to The Rotary Foundation resulted in Neal Graham, Warren Jordan, Paul Pennebaker, Michael Prince, King Rogers, and Dick Swett becoming Paul Harris Fellows. The Rotarian of the Year was Virginia Wilson. During the 1994-1995 year, the club was presented the district’s award for club growth. The membership as of June 30, 1995 was 115. During the year, we were saddened by the death of Art Pople, a special club member whose friendship we will always cherish.
